What do the Royal Marsden do?
The Royal Marsden help treat ALL cancer patients. They are the leading cancer specialists and whilst treating, they also do an amazing amount of research into curing this dreadful disease. The facilities at both Sutton and Chelsea ensure that the hospital trust remains one of the global leaders of cancer research and treatment.
What we aim to do in Katie’s memory
For a girl who dealt with cancer with such strength and humour, we could not let an opportunity pass. Her sister Sarah was pushing Katie to the restaurant in Sutton when Katie saw a sign for the Marsden March. – walking 14 miles between the two sites to raise money for the hospitals. She stated that they would both do it… when Sarah dared to ask how Katie was going to do it seeing as there was a small problem of a wheelchair, she responded with, “that’s easy, you’re pushing!”
It was the light bulb moment for Katie – she wanted to raise money. She had such skills that she knew she could make a difference by fund-raising…and if that didn’t work she would resort to bribery and corruption. Unfortunately she didn’t make it to the March, however her friends and family did it for her and in one day raised £25,000.
We have a big target – but we’re going to do everything possible to raise as much as possible. We will be taking part in fund-raising events across the globe. Our friends will jump, run, walk or hula hoop the length of this country if it means we can be successful.
You can too.
Where will my money go?
The Compsons are working closely with The Royal Marsden to allocate the funds appropriately. We are happy for the money to go anywhere that will help other patients, however Katie had specified that she would want other hospitals to learn from the incredible work that the Marsden do and was especially keen for others not to endure the pain that she had to. The beauty of fundraising with the hospitals is that ultimately the benefits will be felt by cancer patients throughout the country and the world. The research they do is always shared to ensure all patients gain from their work.
